There are natural objects that you cannot stop looking at: at any time of the year they give so many unforgettable exciting impressions that you want to return to them again and again. Such a real pearl of Canada is a unique lake with a gentle romantic name Louise.

The history of the lake

The lake of magical beauty was formed over the millennia as a result of the melting of the glaciers of the Rocky Mountains: jets of glacial water flowed from them, washing away grains of rocks and accumulated in a deep depression surrounded by a ring of peaks. So, gradually filling with melt water, a miracle lake of unusually bluish-green color was formed, for which it was first named Emerald. Apparently, pieces of rocks, dissolving in water, made it look like this precious gem. The wonderful lake is quite small: its area is 0.8 sq. km., length - 2 km., width - half a kilometer.

The lake has long been familiar to the natives of Canada. When in the late 80s of the 19th century, the KTZD (Canadian Pacific Railway) was laid in the vicinity, the builders heard a dull monotonous noise not far away. The origin of the strange hum was explained by the Indian guide, who said that it emanated from the "white mountain" located by the "lake with small fish". Seriously interested, engineer Wilson and his colleagues went along the indicated landmarks and saw an incredibly beautiful picture of the lake. For several minutes they did not utter a word: a silent admiration for the surrounding landscape seized everyone present.

An emerald mirror of water, sparkling with pristine purity, was surrounded by snow-white peaks and dark green velvet of coniferous forests on their slopes. The discovery of the amazing reservoir by Europeans was significant: the lake has become a popular place for Canadians and a natural pearl of Banff National Park.

Why was the lake renamed

The current name was given to him on behalf of the beautiful and clever woman, the daughter of the famous English Queen Victoria, whose reign was dubbed the "Victorian era". The English princess was as smart and progressive as her mother. As the wife of the Canadian governor - the Englishman John Lorne, she actively participated in the public life of the state, was sensitive to the needs of the local population, seeking to positively solve its problems.

For this, Louise won the boundless love and deep respect of the inhabitants of Canada, although she lived here for only 5 years. Leaving the land of forests and mountains, the princess continued to be interested in his fate while in England. In memory of the remarkable woman, a collective decision was made to give her name to the country's most beautiful natural treasure - a mountain lake.

Entertainment for tourists

The enchanting surroundings of the magically beautiful lake attract tourists all year round. In any season, the local landscapes delight with their magnificent variety. In winter, when it freezes, when the streams of waterfalls turn into intricate ice sculptures, and the mountains are covered with huge white caps, everything around seems like the fairy kingdom of the Snow Queen.

A lot of winter entertainment in the form of ski slopes, ice skating and sledding on the bright blue mirror of the lake against the backdrop of unearthly beauty deliver a lot of pleasure and enjoyment, making the rest a real fairy tale. The ski resort, equipped with modern infrastructure, creates all the conditions for a wonderful holiday from November to mid-May. Various holidays, contests, festivals are regularly held here, where not only ordinary tourists come, but also world celebrities: Hollywood stars, musicians, singers, artists, writers, journalists.

In spring it is just as good here: awakening nature, deep blue of the sky reflected in the lake, bright green needles, the first flowers, black grouse mating create a picture full of charm. When the avalanches descend, dozens of climbers rush along the beaten paths to the peaks; lovers of travel on water make boat trips, go rafting; anglers have the opportunity to sit with fishing rods. All equipment can be rented without any problems.

The summer season offers a lot of pleasant entertainment: horse riding, cycling, walking on safe routes; climbing ascents and descents. The hotels are equipped with tennis courts, golf courses where competitions are held.

Autumn paints the shores of the emerald lake with yellow-crimson tones of growing grasses and bushes, creating no less wonderful landscapes. An autumn stay here is an opportunity to breathe plenty of clean air, take unforgettable walks and trips to the ecologically clean corners of the reserve.
