Short story

Only 40 minutes drive from Nizhny Novgorod, and the traveler finds himself in the noble estate Podvyazye, where the atmosphere of the 19th century still reigns.

The majestic architectural ensemble is spread out on a narrow, high promontory, from where picturesque views of the bend of the Oka River and floodplain meadows open. The harmonious combination of nature and architecture and the connection of the estate with the name of the merchants Rukavishnikovs could turn Podvyazye into one of the most attractive places for tourism.... The village of Podvyazye traces its history back to the Middle Ages.

Main house

In the XIV-XV centuries, the ancient Murom road (tract) ran through the Podvyaz fortification settlement along the edge of the high bank of the Oka. Due to the inaccessibility of this cape, robbers headed by the boyar children Dmitry and Nikifor Sokolov, who robbed the carts on the road, chose this cape as their refuge.

In 1608, Vasily Shuisky granted the Podvyaz estate in the patrimony of the streltsy head Vladimir Onichkov, a member of the people's militia of Minin and Pozharsky. The garter was known not only for rampant banditry, but also for honest people - beekeepers who mined medicinal honey, and saints revered in Russia. The name of the village - Garter - is associated with the fact that it was originally located near the elms.

Manor Garter - the estate of the noblemen Priklonsky

In the second half of the 18th century, the estate was acquired by Mikhail Vasilyevich Priklonsky, director of Moscow University. The Priklonsky noble family did a lot to renovate the old estate. The nobles built a spacious manor house, an outbuilding, a service building, an economic building, and a garden was laid out where apple trees, currants, plums, and cherries grew. In honor of the victory over Napoleon in World War II, the Priklonskys erected a rotunda Church of the Resurrection in the estate, unusual for those places., which was a temple in the style of classicism, surrounded by a colonnade. Initially, the church was crowned with a dome with a high spire, now it stands in ruins, but in their outlines you can still see the former grandeur of the building. The original belfry in the form of a triumphal arch rises next to the temple.

The Podvyaz estate is an exemplary farm of the millionaire Rukavishnikov

In 1879, the Podvyazye estate passed into the possession of the Nizhny Novgorod millionaire Sergei Mikhailovich Rukavishnikov, but he realized his dream of an estate not without a fight. The Rukavishnikovs belonged to the merchant class: Sergei's great-grandfather, Grigory Mikhailovich Rukavishnikov, was a simple serf who made capital thanks to his sharp wit, business acumen and hard work.

Being a native of the Nizhny Novgorod village of Krasnaya Ramen, Grigory was engaged in blacksmithing. Having started trading in iron in Nizhny Novgorod, Grigory went from being an entrepreneur who owned several shops to the "steel king" who created an ironworks.

His son, Mikhail Grigorievich, made the plant's products competitive not only in Russia, but also abroad (in particular, steel was supplied to Persia).

The Rukavishnikov family, whose motto sounded like "sacrifice and guardianship," became famous for its charitable deeds. At their own expense, merchants built numerous residential and administrative buildings (for example, bank buildings, museums) in Nizhny Novgorod. Once Sergei Rukavishnikov came to the old woman Praskovya Priklonskaya with a proposal to sell him the estate, but she did not even let him into the house and shouted from the balcony: "The former serf will never get the Priklonsky's noble nest!" After waiting for the death of Praskovya, the merchant bought the Garter estate from the husband of the late daughter of a noblewoman and launched a large-scale construction. For 39 years Rukavishnikov improved the estate, and through his efforts the estate turned into a prosperous farm with a stud farm... The Garter ensemble organically combined red-brick buildings of stables, smithies and monuments of classicism with elements of Western European architecture.

The merchant ordered all kinds of technical innovations from abroad - from plumbing, steam heating, electricity and ending with greenhouses, where pineapples and peaches ripened even in winter. Rukavishnikov adorned the luxurious manor house with a superstructure - a belvedere, allowing one to observe the surroundings, sitting in a pavilion on the roof. All 40 rooms of the house - a round hall, a drawing room, offices, dining rooms, children's rooms, a library, etc. - were furnished with furniture made of fine wood. A magnificent linden alley adjoins the house, and the descent leading from the estate to the Oka is paved with cobblestones. Today the condition of the old estate is assessed as critical, but there is still hope for its revival.

Fence

In 2004, with the participation of a local resident Zhanna Potravko, the Nizhny Novgorod organization for the restoration of the Podvyazye estate was created, which is engaged not only in repair work, but also conducts excursions.
