One of the favorite literary museums among Muscovites and tourists is dedicated to Sergei Yesenin. It is located in Zamoskvorechye, in a two-story house built at the end of the 19th century. Many visitors come to the small and cozy Yesenin Museum, so it is considered one of the most famous museums in Moscow. How is this place related to the life of a poet? And are there personal belongings of the author of the most lyrical stanzas about Russia in the exhibition?

How the museum was created
The two-story mansion, where the museum's collections are located today, was designed by the architect Medvedev and built in 1891 for the dormitory of the merchant N.V. Krylov. At the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century, clerks, artisans and clerks who worked for him lived there. Sergei moved here in 1912 when he was 16 years old. The Yesenins occupied three rooms in apartment no. 6, which was located on the first floor of the building.
Alexander Nikitich arranged for his son to be an assistant in a butcher's shop, where he worked himself. The poet lived for a whole year in his father's apartment, but then he quit his job as a butcher and went to work in a printing house for Ivan Dmitrievich Sytin.
Although the younger Yesenin rented rooms in different places, until 1918 he was formally listed as a resident of the house in which his parents' apartment was located. Therefore, Bolshoi Strochenovsky Lane is the poet's only official address in Moscow.

In 1992, when more than a century had passed since the construction of the building, a disaster struck. The aging wooden house was completely destroyed by fire. This misfortune grieved most of all admirers of the poet's talent, as they planned to create a memorial museum here.
Two years later, the city authorities allocated the necessary funds. The builders used the surviving blueprints and rebuilt the building from scratch. In 1995, thanks to the active work of the poet's niece, Svetlana, the first museum of Sergei Alexandrovich Yesenin was opened in the capital.
In 2010, he took over another building at 4 Chernyshevsky Street, Building 2, where the poet also lived. The new address received the status of the first branch. The second was the house at 21 Klyazminskaya Street, which was used for permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Museum expositions
According to UNESCO, Sergei Yesenin is considered one of the most popular Russian poets. However, the Yesenin Museum is not as large as the museum collections dedicated to the literary work of Tolstoy or Pushkin. The museum was created on a voluntary basis and donated to the city. For many years its employees have been collecting Yesenin's heritage and researching the poet's work.
Yesenin's life turned out to be very short. He died at the age of 30. The area on which the collections are located is small. The expositions occupy about 70 square meters. m in apartment No. 6. Museum rooms present old photographs, lifetime editions and rare documents to guests.
Although there are many objects on display that somehow show the village period of the poet's life, there are only two things that belonged to him. This is a generic icon of the Kazan Mother of God, which was donated by her niece Svetlana Petrovna Yesenina. A small neat lamp is always lit in front of her.

Another genuine personal rarity is an ancient pendulum clock presented to the poet's father by the merchant Krylov. The rest of the exhibits are not directly related to Yesenin, but give a fairly accurate idea of the era in which he happened to live.
In the house you can see the reconstruction of the Yesenin room. There are interior items from the beginning of the last century - a large bed, a dining table, an old sideboard, a simple wooden stool, a factory-made Viennese chair, a copper samovar and a chest. The inhabitants of Zamoskvorechye used all this for their ordinary life and for receiving guests. To make the memorial part look more believable, it exhibits a manuscript of one of Yesenin's poems, a small porcelain inkwell and a quill.
In another room, which is used for concerts and poetry meetings, there are large wardrobes. The works of famous Russian poets and writers are kept here.

In the lobby there is an exposition of herbs and flowers from Konstantinovo and a rough fence of Zamoskvorechye. This part of the museum displays items dedicated to the tea ceremony - a sugar bowl, a teapot and tableware items with beautiful roses. Next to them you can see a beer bottle of the late 19th century with a stamped Russian coat of arms.
Several exhibitions are held in museum halls throughout the year. In addition, the museum staff organizes creative evenings, musical performances and lectures.
Traveling around the city and the Moscow region
Lovers of poetry can take part in walking and bus tours around the capital. During such walks, they get to know the streets of Moscow, which are associated with the names of the imagist poets - Sivtsev Vrazhk, Stary Arbat, Samoteka, Novaya Bozhedomka and the alleys of Zamoskvorechye. The guides show old buildings, read immortal lines and tell the participants of the walks little-known facts from the history of the city and the life of the poets of the “Silver Age”.
The museum program includes several out-of-town excursions. These are historical and literary travels to Konstantinovo, Zakharovo, Bolshiye Vyazemy, Ostafyevo, Tarusa, New Jerusalem Monastery, Yasnaya Polyana, Muranovo, Shakhmatovo and Tarakanovo.
Family and educational programs
The Yesenin Museum always gladly welcomes parents with children and groups of preschoolers and schoolchildren. Every December, an interactive program is held dedicated to the traditions of winter holidays in Russia. Children guess riddles, read Yesenin's poems about winter, listen to old fairy tales by candlelight, drink tea from a samovar and participate in real Christmas carols. The program lasts about an hour and a half and costs 800 rubles for adults and 500 rubles for children (2018).
Preschoolers are interested in participating in interactive lessons about fairy tales, folk traditions and rituals. For elementary school students, there are educational classes about school in Russia, poetry about the beauty of the Ryazan land and about the relationship between man and animals. Teenagers and high school students are invited to fascinating classes about the peculiarities of folklore and the Russian literary language, the history of the "Silver Age" and the popular literary movement of the Imagists.
A Literary Workshop has been opened for adult lovers of the poet's creativity. Lectures and seminars introduce novice authors to the basics of verbal art, teach them to correctly formulate their thoughts and help them find their publisher. A subscription for 10 lectures costs 2000-2500 rubles (2018).
Music lovers come to the museum to listen to songs based on the poet's poems performed by Russian and foreign performers. An unusual creative project of jazz performers from Russia has recently started. The expressive jazz interpretation of the poet's poems has found its ardent admirers, and many connoisseurs of music come to the concerts.
Useful information for visitors
The museum is open five days a week. Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends from 10:00 to 18:00, and on Thursdays from 13:00 to 21:00. When planning the time of your visit, it should be borne in mind that the ticket office stops working one hour before closing.
An entrance ticket for adults costs 200 rubles, a reduced one - 150 rubles. A ticket to attend a thematic lecture - 300 rubles, a walking tour - 500 rubles. Amateur photography costs 150 rubles, and video filming costs 300 rubles (2018).
The exhibition can be viewed independently. However, it is much more fun to do it with an experienced guide.Sightseeing and thematic excursions are held in the halls. In addition to the story about the life and work of the poet, tourists have the opportunity to listen to an audio recording of poems performed by him and watch rare newsreels from the beginning of the last century. Guided tours with audio guides take place two to three times a day. Tickets for them cost 200-250 rubles (2018).
How to get there
The museum is located in the historical center of the city, in Bolshoy Strochenovsky lane, house 24, building 2. The nearest metro stations are Paveletskaya, Serpukhovskaya and Dobryninskaya. It is not difficult to walk from any of them to the museum building in 5-10 minutes.
